A database is capable of storing huge amount of data of the same structure. This might for example be data of persons containing name, sex, date of birth and so on. Each entry (e.g. each person) with all it's data would be called a dataset. Databases often contain thousand or millions of datasets.
The main advantage of a database compared to listing the data in a normal spreadsheet is that databases could make use of a special "language" which allows accessing and filtering data. This allows requests such as "Show me all males with brown hair and knowledge in computer science who are between 20 and 35 years old. Please sort them by the place they live in."
